The climbing roses can be classified into different categories.
They can be:
1) Based on their fragrance:
- Fragrant (larger flowers)
- Highly fragrant (smaller, clustered flowers)
2) Based on their flowering pattern:
- Once blooming varieties (hardy up to -20 °C, blooming once a year)
- Repeat or continuous blooming varieties (hardy up to -15 °C, blooming multiple times throughout the year)
Within the once blooming and repeat blooming compass rose varieties, there exist numerous different variations.
Varieties of fragrant climbing roses
The color range is enormous for these varieties as well: in commerce, you can find all shades of red, pink, yellow, and white. Some varieties of climbing roses have interesting multicolored flowers; examples include the American Pillai or the Harlequin variety.
Fragrant climbing rose varieties captivate people with their special aroma, such as the Don Juan climbing rose, which has a beautiful burgundy color. Additionally, the Orange climbing rose delights the eyes with its shade of orange. The Sympathie climbing rose is also a popular variety, enchanting people with its red color and blooming from early summer until late autumn. And let’s not forget about the Pierre De Ronsard roses. As they can climb up to three meters in height, they can be a splendid addition to fences and house walls.
Planting climbing roses
Plant bare-root roses in autumn and early spring, while container roses can be planted at any time of the year, except during freezing periods and hot, dry days. Choose a location for them that receives at least 5-6 hours of sunlight, preferably in the morning. They have moderate soil requirements but dislike stagnant water and require ample nutrients. The secret to abundant flowering and vigorous growth lies in a sunny position, good nutrient and water supply, and pruning after the flowers fade.
Before planting, prepare the planting hole with organic matter since roses will remain in one spot for several years, even decades. This organic matter can be well-rotted manure, compost, or humus. Afterward, it is advisable to provide nutrients twice a year – in autumn and spring. Water the planting hole thoroughly before and after planting. Depending on the weather, it’s recommended to water the roses with 10-15 liters per square meter every 8-12 days, preferably in the morning before the heat of the day.
The spacing between climbing roses should be 150-200 cm from each other, 50-60 cm from the wall, and 20 cm from the support. If they are placed next to a pergola or column, it is advisable to plant two identical varieties of climbing roses around each column.
Pruning climbing roses
Pruning can be done from late February to early April, after the frosty weather has passed but while the plant is still in its dormant state, when the buds have just started to swell. If done during this time, not only will the rose produce more flowers, but its lifespan can also be extended. Pruning should always be done at a slight angle, about 5-10 mm above the bud, ensuring that the bud is on the higher side of the cut. Pruning climbing roses is mainly for rejuvenation and shaping purposes. Repeat-flowering varieties should only be pruned in spring. Their trailing shoots should be trained along a support.
Supports for climbing roses
Climbing roses require supports to fully display their beauty. They thrive best when supported by living plants. It can be a deciduous tree, pine, or evergreen shrub. The best method is to rejuvenate a dried-out tree trunk and dress it up with flowers again. It is necessary to use ties for training because climbing roses do not have tendrils to cling to.
Of course, climbing roses can also be trained on weather-resistant trellises made of wood or other materials, or on ready-made rose arches and gates.
The most beautiful spot in rose gardens and parks is the rose pergola, a truly romantic place where one can be alone, as a couple, or in small groups. The pergola’s frame can be purchased ready-made; only the plants need a few years to grow and cover it completely.
